For the hill of it... - June 27

It was a nice down hill ride to white bird idaho where a huge pass lay ahead. We came to a very tall bridge and well it had to be done...we peed off the bridge, it was a 8 sec drop. We about died from laughing so much. The group stopped for lunch under a little gazebo and prepared for the pass.We were told in town if we took old 95 it would be more scenic and and hardly any cars. On top of that a big rode bike race is held on the hill, called...Just For the Hill of it. So we just had to take the rode in hopes of seeing some wild life and for no traffic. We rode through white bird and if you blinked you would miss the town. The road started to twist and turn through the hilly country side, the fields next to us looked like an ocean as the wind blew at our backs. With no traffic on the road, we spread out and started to sing songs, complain about the heat, and waited for my iPad to cool down. It was so hot my iPad got angry and decided it wanted out of the sun, but cooled down quickly once Jarod started to sing. The road started it's incline up, only 6 more miles to the top. We started to hit switch back after switch back as we climbed up the side of the hill. This is when the story gets good!

After about the forth or fifth switch back, my bike made the most horrible noise. My peddles locked up and I came to a stop only to look down and see my derailer ripped off my bike and in my spokes. This was not a good thing for we still had a good 3 miles up the hill and 6 miles from the nearest town. The group all came over and just starred at my bike. How did this even happen was the question running though our minds. One of the girls even put flowers on my bike to mourn the lost. Jarod ripped my bike apart as the rest of the group found shelter under a tree. The only thing we could think of that happened was the tar on the road got so hot a piece of gravel got stuck in my chain and BOOM! Jarod made my bike a fixed gear bike that did not go up hill really good. So we talked about getting a ride to the next town, which had a bike shop, and then biking back to this spot so i could ride ALL the way across America. But I said i was going to ride across America and I started to push my bike up the hill. I took off up the hill past the girls as they were taking a water break. Now let's remember it is about 92 outside on the side of a hill with no shelter from the sun besides a few bushes. I'm almost to the top of the hill and round a corner only to see a huge bull moose standing in the middle of the road. I rub my eyes to see if i was seeing things. What is the first thing I do, I dump the bike in the middle of the road and take the camera. I sneak up about 30 foot from it and get some great shoots. Well that was exciting, where is everyone else. I peak down the side of the hill to see. Only to find Jarod and Chad on one switch back and the girls on another. With no cell phone service I could not find out what was going on. Finally Chad comes up and informs me that one of the girls bikes did the same thing my bike did and Jarod broke another spoke. But the funny thing is Chad first found my empty bike in the middle of the road, thinking I just left it and went into town. Then I come up from the side of the hill and yelled MOOSE! With no shirt on and a towel on my head, chad could not help but laugh at me. Chad rode into town to see what he could find so when we got to town we would have a place to camp already. Jarod and the girls started to walk the bikes up the hill while the girls with working bikes rode on to catch Chad. This hill was eating us one by one!

We all finally got to town by coasting in and went right to the city park to lay our sun baked bodies in the cool grass. It was a great park that Chad found, No Sprinklers! We set up camp and went back down town to eat Mexican food and try to eat away the horrible day we just had. The food was amazing and me and Jarod both got a root beer, even though we just spent about 9 hours in the sun with hardly any water, but it was so good! We met a very nice family in the restaurant that gave us the number to the bike shop owner. We thanked them for there kindness and headed back to camp, little did we know they would change and impact our lives forever.
